Capturing Sound-Sensoji
I tried to capture sounds with photography, then edit them into a silent video which hopefully the viewers could feel the auditory aspect of it.
What I did was walking randomly in the area, whenever I hear a sound that caught my attention, I would swing my camera to that direction meanwhile taking a picture with a low shutter speed. Sound needs a duration of time, so I think with long exposure I would be able to capture the movement and the sounds compressing into the photo.
I wish the viewers to focus more on the rhythm and the harmony of the image, so I tried to make the visual forms more abstract. When processing each photo, I try to play with each adjustment for the picture, I would correspond each visual aspect with the characteristics of sound. Exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows, blacks and whites, the texture the clarity the grains, they all make you hear a different type of sound. I feel like Iʼm composing when Iʼm editing the photos. I also try to think of the visual composition when Iʼm choosing/editing so that each photo would “sound” coherent. Just like a classical music piece, it has its ups and downs, climaxes and breaks, but overall it should be coherent. And I tried to follow the rules of musical composing as well, for example a major chord to follow as a general rule. As parallel to this project, warm colors being a main element throughout the whole piece.
